Payton Jones Career Day Leads Methodist Past Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Methodist women's lacrosse team went on the road Friday afternoon to take on Guilford College, in a non-conference contest. The Monarchs would leave the Armfield Athletic Center with an impressive 17-5 win over the Quakers.

This snaps a four-game losing streak against Guilford and gives Methodist its first victory over the Quakers since the 2006 season, when the Monarchs won 22-13.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Guilford, 17-5
Records: Methodist 2-0, Guilford 0-1
Location: Armfield Athletic Center; Greensboro, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist did all the scoring in the first quarter of the game, 5-0. The first two goals were scored by Tia Marlinghaus before Kayla Nee found the back of the cage for the third goal. Payton Jones capped off the opening frame with two additional scores.
  • The Monarchs tallied a sixth goal, this one from Mikayla Ramos, before Guilford got on the board for the first time in the contest. A late score by Jones put Methodist up 7-1 heading into halftime.
  • Freshman Maddie Hagler picked up right where the Monarchs left off with the team's eighth goal, which was also Hagler's first career collegiate goal. For a brief time, the Quakers evened up the goal count in the stanza after outscoring Methodist three to two over a six-minute span. The Monarchs responded back by going on a four-goal scoring run to conclude the third, with Kennedy Martin scoring half of the goal during that time.
  • Jones and Keegan Foyles finished up the Methodist scoring with three more goals total -- two by Jones and one by Foyles -- in the fourth quarter. Guilford registered the last goal of the game to get to our final score.
FAST FACTS
  • Jones made her presence known on the field in multiple ways. She set new career-highs in shots (15), SOG (11), goals (7), points (7), caused turnovers (7), and draw controls (6).
  • The Monarchs had nearly double the number of groundballs (37 to 19) and draw controls (17 to nine) than the Quakers.
