FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist softball hosted its first two games of the 2023 season on Saturday afternoon with a non-conference doubleheader against Randolph College. Unfortunately, the Monarchs would end up on the losing end of both contests (5-4 & 7-4) to the WildCats at Price Field.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Randolph def. Methodist, 5-4 (8 Inns.); Randolph def. Methodist, 7-4
Records: Methodist 0-2; Randolph 2-0
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Randolph scored the first run of Game 1, in the second inning, when Lexie Hawkins hit a double to center field to bring home the runner on second. An inning later, Methodist newcomer Sydney Sizemore smacked a hit to drive in two runs and give the Monarchs the lead.
- The fourth and fifth innings saw the Wildcats tack on three more runs but Methodist was able to get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the fifth, off a Randolph error.
- Freshman Emily Angel tied the game up, 4-4, with her RBI single in the sixth. This game would take one extra inning to determine winner with Taryn Campbell getting the game-winning run home for the WildCats on her hit, in the eighth.
- Game 2 started off with some miscues by the Monarchs, which led to two unearned runs by Randolph. In a flash though, Methodist responded back with three (unearned) runs to take the lead after inning number two.
- The third inning saw witness both team scoring, two by the WildCats and one by the Monarchs, to tie up the game. The final runs of the day came from Randolph as their team took a three-run lead in sixth inning. The Monarchs were able to fill up the bases in the bottom of the seventh to try to either tie or walk it off but were unable to bring home one run.
NUMBERS
- Alexandra Edwards went 5 for 8 between both games for Methodist, in the team's leadoff spot.
- Both sides had plenty of chances to score more runs in the two games. A total of 19 runners were stranded by Randolph along with the Monarchs leaving 17 runners as well.
