Methodist Cruises to Win Over Mary Baldwin

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Methodist women's basketball team took down the Mary Baldwin Fighting Squirrels on Friday night, earning a 58-46 win. Eleven players scored for Methodist during the road victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs scored the first points of the game – a two-pointer from Aniyah Tate and a three by Jillian Peterson – but the Fighting Squirrels scored eight of the game's next ten points to take an 8-7 lead. Roles reversed as Methodist took control, outscoring Mary Baldwin 12-2 (with Melissa D'Oleo and Alyssa Shazer both sinking three-pointers) to end the first quarter.
  • Shazer opened the second quarter with another made three, cushioning Methodist's lead to 12 points. The Monarchs continued to outpace the home team with their lead reaching as many as 19 points in the period before taking a 37-21 advantage to the locker room.
  • Up 43-24 in the third quarter, Aneesa Irizarry scored a layup to give Methodist a 21-point lead. A minute later, with the difference having decreased to 20 points, Kiley Hicks knocked down a jumper to give the Monarchs a game-high 22-point edge over the Fighting Squirrels.
  • Mary Baldwin scored the first nine points of the fourth period to diminish Methodist's comfortable 17-point lead down to eight. Hicks, Peterson and Tate scored the next trio of baskets to put the Monarchs back up by 14. With 4:05 remaining, the Fighting Squirrels sank two free throws to make the score 58-46. Neither team would score during the final four minutes of regulation.

  • Methodist had a highly successful first half offensively, shooting 55.5% (15-for-27) from the field and 54.5% (6-for-11) from three-point range.
  • Aniyah Tate was the team's leading scorer with 12 points, while Alyssa Shazer recorded a career-high eight points in just six minutes of action, shooting 2-for-3 from behind the arc.
  • All 16 Monarchs recorded a statistical contribution in the team win.
UP NEXT
Methodist will have a quick turnaround, facing Southern Virginia University on Saturday at 4 p.m. The contest will be the team's third consecutive game away from home. Methodist and Southern Virginia met earlier this season on Nov. 19 with the Monarchs claiming a 54-53 triumph.
