Methodist Makes Light Work of Marietta; Golombeski Becomes All-Time Winningest Goalie

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist women's lacrosse team was victorious against Marietta College in the wet weather on Friday. The Monarchs battled to an 18-8 win over the Pioneers.

HOW IT HAPPENED 
  • After a shot and a save on each end of the field, Mikayla Ramos got the scoring started with an assist from Kayla Nee. The Pioneers responded with a goal less than a minute later, followed by a goal from Nee to give the Monarchs another one-goal edge. Methodist scored five more goals – three by Layla Wiesenfeld – to finish the first period with a 7-1 advantage.
  • After three shots by the Monarchs were saved by the Marietta goalkeeper, the Pioneers trudged down the wet field and scored the first goal of the second quarter. The next two goals were scored by Methodist, as Nee assisted both Payton Jones and Ramos with less than a minute between the two scores. Marietta netted one more goal with under two minutes left in the half, but the Monarchs answered with two more scores to take an 11-3 lead.
  • The Methodist offense stayed hot in the third quarter, starting with a goal by Jones just over a minute into the period. After allowing a score by the Pioneers, the Monarchs rattled off four more, including two for Alex Shoffler, one for Wiesenfeld, and one for Jones on a free position attempt.
  • Up by 12, the Monarchs took their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter and gave up three-straight goals to the Pioneers. Jones put two more on the board for Methodist in the final minutes of the game before Marietta added one more to its total in the waning seconds of the match to reduce the final difference to 10 goals.
FAST FACTS 
  • Goalkeeper Jem Golombeski was credited with the win for allowing just three goals with five saves in 30 minutes, making her the all-time winningest goalkeeper in Methodist women's lacrosse history. She passes Lindsey Cosgray for the record.
  • Kayla Nee recorded a program-record seven assists while matching her career-high of eight points. She leads the team with 24 assists on the season.
  • With her six draw controls in the game, Tia Marlinghaus surpassed 100 draw control wins in her collegiate career. She becomes the seventh Monarch in program history to accomplish this.
  • Payton Jones and Layla Wiesenfeld led the team with 5 goals each.
  • This is the third game in a row that the Monarchs have scored exactly 18 goals.
