HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1:
  • Mary Baldwin's batters were able to jump on Alyssa Barwick, Methodist starter, in the first inning. Allison Crum of the Fighting Squirrels brought in the first run of the game with an RBI single and then Paige Fix followed suit with her own RBI hit.
  • In the third, Mary Baldwin threatened again with bases loaded but Barwick of the Monarchs got out of trouble by forcing a pop up for the last out.
  • The Fighting Squirrels added one more run in both the fourth and sixth innings, to make it 4-0. First a wild pitch allowed the Mary Baldwin runner at third to score before Crum connected with her second RBI of the game.
Game 2:
  • Just like the first game, the Fighting Squirrels once again scored two runs in the opening frame. An RBI single by Hadley May got the first run for Mary Baldwin followed by Crum putting a ball in play to drive in another.
  • Methodist got both of those runs back in the top of the second to tie it up at 2-2. An error throw by the Fighting Squirrels defense allowed Virginia Crews to score from third. A couple of batters later, Haley Downes drove in the second Monarch run with her RBI single.
  • Methodist took advantage of a couple more Mary Baldwin fielding mistakes and scored additional runs in the fourth and fifth, now 4-2. The Fighting Squirrels made it a one-run, 4-3, game in the bottom half of the fifth as May hit a sacrifice fly to score Caroline Whitfield from third.
  • Haven Williams gave the Monarchs a three-run cushion, 6-3, in the seventh with a two RBI double. After being entered in the sixth, Emma Neeley gave up two singles to begin the bottom half of the inning. She would settle down and get the next three batters out to secure the win.
NUMBERS
  • Emily McCreery was excellent in the circle for Mary Baldwin, in Game 1. She threw a complete-game shutout while giving up just one hit and struck out eight Methodist batters.
  • In Game 2, both Downes and Williams finished with two hits each and had all of the Monarchs RBIs.
  • Following today's games, Downes is now currently riding a seven-game on base streak.
UP NEXT
Methodist will head back to the Old Dominion state on Wednesday for a non-conference doubleheader with Ferrum College. First pitch is scheduled for 4 PM.
