Monarchs Walk-Off One, Lose Another in Extras Versus Pacers

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist softball team split a pair of games with William Peace University on Saturday. The Monarchs earned a walk-off victory in the first game before falling just short in an extended, 11-inning second game.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. William Peace, 3-2; William Peace def. Methodist, 10-8 (11 innings)
Records: Methodist 11-11 (2-2 USA South); William Peace 15-9 (3-3) ;
Location: Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first three innings in the first game, William Peace took the first lead with a run in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, the Monarchs matched the Pacers as a bunt by Amanda Blackburn squeezed Ariana Freytes in for the score. Emma Neeley gave up a second run to William Peace in the sixth, allowing the Pacers to retake the lead.
  • After Neeley held the Pacers scoreless in the top of the seventh, the Methodist offense went to work. Alexandra Edwards started off the rally with a standup double. She advanced to third on a successful bunt by Sydney Sizemore, who stole second base during the next at-bat.
  • Edwards scored on a bunt by Haley Fethke that also moved Sizemore to third. Next up, Alyssa Rivas laid down another bunt, bringing Sizemore safely home to secure the walk-off win.
  • The Pacers once again struck first in the second contest, producing two runs in the top of the third. In the bottom of the frame, Methodist scored three runs as Edwards, Sizemore and Fethke were all batted in on three separate hits.
  • In back-and-forth fashion, William Peace tied the game in the fifth inning, then took a 5-3 lead in the top of the sixth. The Monarchs answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth, retying the game at 5-5.
  • A scoreless seventh inning for both squads forced extra innings. Both teams recorded two runs in the eighth, one run in the ninth and zero runs in the tenth. The tie was broken in the 11th inning as Methodist failed to match William Peace's two runs.
