Big Innings in the Sixth & Seventh Led to a Methodist Victory Over Williams

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist baseball team, ranked 20th in the nation, played its final non-conference game of the regular season on Tuesday evening as the team hosted Williams College (Mass.). After trailing early on, the Monarchs produced two six or more run innings to come away with a 15-6 win over the Ephs at Armstrong-Shelley Field.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Williams, 15-6
Records: Methodist 17-5, Williams 5-5
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Daniel Lynch got Williams on the board in the second inning with his RBI single. The Ephs would take a 4-0 advantage following a 2-RBI single by Cole Whitehouse in the third and a Matthew Brown RBI double in the fourth.
  • Methodist got its first run of the contest during the bottom half of the fourth, when Charles Jordan smacked a base hit up the middle to score the runner from third.
  • Each team tallied a run in the fifth inning, 5-2. First, Whitehouse had an RBI single for Williams in the top half before the Monarchs responded back as Rob Wilkerson hit a double to right field to drive in a run.
  • A six-run sixth inning led Methodist to taking its first lead of the ballgame. With bases loaded, the Ephs pitching staff issued three straight free passes (a hit by pitch and two walks) to tie the game at 5-5. Wilkerson came up to the plate next for the Monarchs and drove in another two runs off his hit with a third run scoring on the play due to a Williams error.
  • The Ephs were able to get one of those runs back in top of the seventh as Whitehouse recorded his fourth RBI, a game-high.
  • Methodist put the game out of reach just a half inning later by tacking on seven more runs.
MORE STATS
  • Jackson Deal, Caleb Greene, and Wilkerson all finished with a multi-RBI game.
  • Williams out hit the Monarchs 15-6, with Whitehouse going a perfect 4-for-4.
  • This was the first-ever meeting between Methodist and the Ephs.
  • The Monarchs were patient at the plate and it led to drawing 12 walks, four of which were by Jordan (a career-high).
UP NEXT
