FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. The Methodist baseball team impressively took down #18 Christopher Newport in the third game of the Armstrong Invitational on Saturday. The Monarchs showed excellence on the mound and at the plate en route to earning an 8-2 win over the Captains.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Christopher Newport was first on the board with two hits that led to a run in the top of the first inning. With two outs and bases loaded in the bottom of the inning, Caleb Greene drew a walk to advance a runner home and tie the score, 1-1.

With the bases still packed, Charles Jordan confidently strolled up to the plate and delivered a grand slam, smashing the ball over the left field wall to lift the Monarchs to an early 5-1 lead over their ranked opponents.

The Captains scored a second run in the top of the second inning before William St. Leger recorded his third strikeout of the game to end the frame. The Monarchs added a run of their own in the third inning, as Jordan laid down a sacrifice bunt that safely scored Wesley Hall.

St. Leger faced just three batters in the fourth inning, three in the fifth, and five in the sixth, allowing no additional scores for the Captains. Tanner Freeland entered in the top of the seventh and followed St. Leger's lead by holding Christopher Newport scoreless for the remainder of the game.

Methodist added a run in the seventh (a Stancil Bowles RBI-single that scored Rob Wilkerson) and a run in the eighth (a Wilkerson RBI-double that brought home Jackson Deal) to boost their margin of victory to six runs.

William St. Leger allowed just two runs on six hits over six innings of work while striking out seven batters. The victory improved his W-L record to 3-0, while pitching counterpart Tanner Freeland earned his first save of the season.
