FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist softball hosted Averett University, a former conference member, on Thursday afternoon for a couple of non-conference games. A little bit of a slow start by the Monarchs in Game 1 led to a thrilling end, as a walk-off grand slam completed the 12-8 comeback win against the Cougars. Methodist got the sweep of Averett with a 4-2 victory in the second game.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Methodist def. Averett, 12-8; Methodist def. Averett, 4-2
Records: Methodist 9-5; Messiah 3-7
Location: Price Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cougars took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of Game 1. A triple by Karsin Lee scored the first run of the contest before Lee scored on a Taylor Sullivan hit. Eventually Sullivan crossed home plate off a Monarch miscue.
- An RBI by Hannah Zabik, in the third inning, followed by a pair of RBIs off the bat of Salem Hill gave Averett a 6-0 advantage after four innings.
- It was not until the fifth when Methodist tallied its first two runs. Both Alexandra Edwards and Sydney Sizemore sent come backers right up the middle to drive in a run each, 6-2.
- The sixth saw each team score two runs. Zabik brought in a couple of Cougar runners with her hit up the middle in top half of the inning then some Averett errors led to the Monarchs making it 8-4.
- In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars got the first Methodist batter out but then walked the next three Monarchs to load the bases. Up comes Haven Williams for Methodist and she delivers with a two RBI base hit.
- A third error by Averett allowed the Monarchs to tie the ballgame, 8-8. Two more free passes filled the bases once more and then Sizemore sent the first pitch of the at-bat over the left center field fence to finish off the comeback.
- Game 2 saw the Cougars get on the scoreboard in the first inning, just like the previous game, with an RBI single by Hill.
- Methodist would take the lead over in the second inning. A triple by Williams got one run in before Amanda Blackburn drove in Williams on an RBI groundout to make it 2-1.
- Angela Rodriguez tied the game up for Averett in the top of the fourth with her double down the left field line. The 2-2 score was short lived as Haley Fethke turned on the pitch and the ball left the field in a hurry to put the Monarchs up 3-2. Emily Angel provided the final run for Methodist on a sacrifice fly to score the runner at third.
NUMBERS
- The power hitters of Sizemore and Fethke traded off games with each other, as one did well in one game compared to the other. Sizemore went 3 for 5 with five RBIs (season-high) in the first contest, while game two saw Fethke go 3 for 3.
- Rookie Kim Bordeaux was called upon twice today and it resulted in a pair of firsts. She picked up her first collegiate win after pitching the top half of the seventh in Game 1. The second game saw Bordeaux record her first collegiate save after keeping the Cougars bats quiet for the final two innings.
- Averett had chances to win in both games but the team left to many runners on base. The Cougars would strand 12 players in the matchup between the two schools before leaving another 11 in the second contest.
