THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Brevard, 26-3
Records: Methodist 5-8 (3-3 USA South), Brevard 2-12 (0-7)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After allowing Brevard to score the first goal just over a minute into the first quarter, Methodist took control, scoring six straight. Jesse Leyble produced the first score for the Monarchs, followed by Ryan Kavounis less than two minutes later. Hunter Vaughan recorded back-to-back goals, then assisted Leyble on his second score of the game before RJ Breeden connected with Nate Moore for a goal with under a minute remaining in the period.
  • Kavounis and Vaughan each found the back of the net to start the second quarter, pushing Methodist's scoring streak to eight goals. The Tornados briefly stopped the Monarchs' run with a goal to make the score 8-2, but the home team went back to work, punching in six more scores before the end of the half. Vaughan, Cole Mayer and Patrick Rowell each added one to the total, then with less than two minutes until halftime, Kavounis and Leyble contributed one goal each. With four seconds remaining in the period, Vaughan pulled back his stick and released a shot that sailed in and put the Monarchs up 14-2.
  • Kavounis scored right out of the gate to begin the second half, sending a shot past the goalkeeper just 40 seconds into the period. The Monarchs dominated the quarter as Cy Horner, Vaughan, Breeden and Jacob Burnette all widened the gap between the teams while the Methodist defense blanked Brevard's offense for the entire third period.
  • Breeden scored the first goal of the fourth, answered by a score from the Tornados. The Monarchs didn't let up as Abe Zwiefka scored the next goal, his first of the season. Next, Leyble and Breeden extended Methodist's lead to 20 goals with a score each before freshman Colin Bouvet scored the first collegiate goal of his young career. Breeden and Burnette tallied one more score apiece before the final horn sounded, making it a record-setting day for the Monarchs.
