Nationally Ranked N.C. Wesleyan Defeats Methodist

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  The Methodist University men's tennis team played 16th ranked, in the nation, North Carolina Wesleyan University on the road Tuesday afternoon. The Monarchs managed to take one flight win in their 8-1 loss to the Battling Bishops at the Slick Family Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Methodist pair of Matthew Hurley & Wills Belser faced off with Luca Knese & Albert Sitwell of N.C. Welseyan, who are regionally ranked 11th in doubles, on court one. Hurley & Belser fought valiantly but fell 8-5 to Knese & Sitwell.
  • No. 2 doubles saw the Monarchs of Andrew Wood & Cameron Roth versus Sean Keane & John Falke of the Battling Bishops, in which Keane & Falke won 8-3. With an 8-0 shutout win in doubles three, N.C. Wesleyan's Diego Segovia & Augusto Roca defeated Methodist's Will Trocchi & Evan Kane.
  • Unfortunately, Trocchi was also kept off the scoreboard in singles action (6-0, 6-0) against Gustavo Rivas of the Battling Bishops in No. 5 singles. On court six, the Monarch's Kane would lose 6-1, 6-1 to Renato Barros of N.C. Wesleyan.
  • Taking on the Battling Bishops Bernardo Messineo, in number three singles, was Wood of Methodist, a flight that saw Messineo win 6-1, 6-2. In the battle between the fours, Roth (MU) took a 6-2, 6-1 loss to Valentin Morelli (NCWU).
  • N.C. Weslyan's Vittorio Noli picked up the victory (6-2, 6-2) on court two against the Monarch's own Belser. Hurley claimed the lone win for Methodist by taking down Tshepo Mosarwa of the Battling Bishops in three sets. A close first set, 7-6 (7-5), put Mosarwa in front but Hurley pulled out a 6-1 win in set two before clinching the flight in the super tiebreaker (10-8).
UP NEXT
Methodist is back in action on Wednesday with an away non-conference match with Ferrum College, a make-up from its original April 7 date. The contest is set to start at 2 p.m.
