ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  Methodist University women's tennis took on fellow USA South Athletic Conference opponent North Carolina Wesleyan University, on Tuesday afternoon. JUST THE FACTS
Final score: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist 9-0
Records: Methodist 10-5 (7-1 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 8-8 (8-0)
Location: Slick Family Tennis Center; Rocky Mount, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • N.C. Wesleyan took all three doubles flights to go up 3-0. In number one doubles, the Monarch duo of Toni Laney & Veva Willocks lost 8-5 to the Battling Bishops regionally ranked, 11th, team of Kristal Dule & Cristina Mendoza Romero.
  • Methodist own Kamdyn Balko & Cailin Cifra suffered an 8-4 defeat to Julie Schoorsmans & Elisa Mariotti of N.C. Weleyan, in the battle of the twos. Megan Kidd & Valeria Matute came close to picking up a win for the Monarchs on court three, but fell short in the tie breaker, 8-7 (7-3), to Bethan Fothergill & Andrea Elaez Miranda.
  • It was a similar story in singles action with N.C. Wesleyan claiming all six flights. In the contest between the ones, Dule – who is also ranked regionally ninth in singles – won 6-2, 6-0 over Laney of Methodist. With identical set scores of 6-2, the Battling Bishops' Mariotti was victorious against the Monarchs' Cifra.
  • In the No. 3 flight between Kidd (MU) and Mendoza (NCWU), both sets had to go to the tiebreaker round, where Kidd would come up just short each time 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-5). Matute was the only Monarch to pick up a set win in her flight, No. 4, against Miranda of the Battling Bishops. Miranda won the first set 7-6 (7-4) before Matute claimed set two, 7-5, but eventually Miranda secured the flight in the super tiebreaker (10-8).
  • On court five, Methodist's Luciana Forma was matched up with N.C. Wesleyan's Fothergill. A tight first set saw Fothergill win 7-6 (7-3) before a 6-3 score in set two gave her the win. Squaring up on court six was Willocks of the Monarchs and Schoorsmans of the Battling Bishops, which saw Schoorsmans as the victory (6-0, 6-2).
