Monarchs Outpaced by Knights

Buena Vista, Va.  The Methodist men's lacrosse team was beaten by Southern Virginia on Saturday after digging an early deficit. The Monarchs suffered a 17-6 loss to the Knights.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs gave up six unanswered goals in the first quarter while taking just one shot on the other end of the field. Jackson Bulkin entered as goalkeeper in place of Gabe Russell at the end of the period.
  • The Knights recorded three more scores to start the second quarter before Hunter Vaughan found the back of the net for Methodist's first score. Trailing 8-1, the Monarchs conceded three more goals to Southern Virginia before halftime.
  • Jacob Burnette got the Monarchs on the board first in the third quarter. After a score for the Knights, Vaughan added another goal to Methodist's total. Southern Virginia answered once again with another score, which this time was followed by a goal for Matt Bentz with 24 seconds remaining in the third period.
  • Matthew Liquori checked in for Bulkin to start the fourth. Down 14-4, the Monarchs scored the first two goals of the quarter, first a goal by Jordan Frenzen that was assisted by Cy Horner, then a score by Horner himself. The Knights responded with three straight scores to end the match.
FAST FACTS
  • The Monarchs were out-shot but the Knights 47-23. Methodist put just 13 shots on goal compared to Southern Virginia's 29.
  • Hunter Vaughan led the team with three points (two goals and one assist), also recording one ground ball and one caused turnover.
  • Jake Bandler recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
