Piedmont Claims Back-And-Forth Victory Over Methodist

DEMOREST, Ga.  On Saturday afternoon, Methodist University women's lacrosse team traveled down to the Peach State to take on Piedmont University in USA South Athletic Conference bout. A back-and-forth battle resulted in the Lions getting a 14-12 victory over the Monarchs at the Walker Athletic Complex.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Piedmont def. Methodist, 14-12
Records: Methodist 10-5 (5-3 USA South), Piedmont 11-5 (7-1)
Location: Walker Athletic Complex; Demorest, Georgia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Scoring the first goal was Ava Trankina of Piedmont after a scoreless eight minutes to begin the contest. Methodist's Kennedy Martin got the Monarchs on the board with her first goal. Each side tallied a goal apiece – Maggi Spratlin (Lions) and Tia Marlinghaus (Monarchs) with the goals – to make it 2-2, but Trankina found the back on net once more to put Piedmont up by one, at the end of the quarter.
  • A goal by Aly Reece gave the Lions a two goal, 4-2, advantage a few minutes into the second period. Alex Shoffler brought Methodist back to within one of Piedmont's lead until Lindley Ward re-upped the difference with her score. The Monarchs then scored three consecutive goals to give them a 6-5 lead, goals were by Mikayla Ramos, Keegan Foyles, and Layla Wiesenfeld. The Lions would outscore Methodist 2-1 in the last three minutes of the first half, to make it 7-7 at halftime.
  • Early in the third frame a goal by Martin made it 8-7 in favor of the Monarchs but less than a minute later Piedmont's Trankina registered her third of the game to tie it back up. This same similar pattern of Methodist scoring followed by the Lions continued for the majority of the third. Spratlin broke that trend with her late goal, which put Piedmont in the lead once more 11-10.
  • Trankina recorded another goal for the Lions, and the Monarchs found themselves down by two scores again to start the fourth stanza. Marlinghaus got a goal back for Methodist but that score was short lived due to a goal by Ward of Piedmont. With just under ten minutes left in fourth, a goal by Martin made it 13-12 that way the Monarchs only trailed by one. Unfortunately, Methodist was unable to score the game-tying goal and Trankina sealed the win for the Lions with one last score.
FAST FACTS
  • Despite the loss, Methodist controlled the draw circle by winning 22 of the 28 draws. Leading the way was Marlinghaus with 12, which gives her over 100 draw control victories this season.
  • Trankina led all scorers with a game-high five goals. Both Marlinghaus and Martin each scored three goals, tied for the team-high among the Monarchs.
  • The turnover bug hit Methodist hard in this game with 34 giveaways. Piedmont was able to cause 16 of the turns as Trankina forced five herself.
