Monarchs Score Big on Senior Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  For the final time of the regular season, the Methodist women's lacrosse team took the field and earned a win on Saturday, triumphing over Brevard College. The Monarchs bested the Tornados 20-6 in a Senior Day victory.

With eight points in the match, Methodist's Kayla Nee reached 103 points on the season, breaking the program record for points in a single season. She is just the second Monarch to eclipse 100 points in a season, joining Madison Ronelli who totaled 100 in 2018.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Brevard, 20-6
Records: Methodist 11-5 (6-3 USA South), Brevard 11-5 (5-4)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Keegan Foyles was active early for Methodist, scoring the first two goals of the contest. Kayla Nee scored next, then dished to Alex Shoffler for the team's fourth score. Tia Marlinghaus took one to the goal by herself to give the Monarchs a 5-0 lead before Brevard answered with a goal. Methodist went right back to work, as Foyles scored two straight again, followed by Mikayla Ramos who made the score 8-1. The Tornados scored a second goal in response, but Marlinghaus found the back of the net once more before the end of the first quarter to put Methodist ahead by seven.
  • Ramos and Marlinghaus scored back-to-back goals to start the second period before Methodist conceded two in a row to the Tornados. The Monarchs tightened up on defense and restarted the offense, with Ramos scoring three goals in a row to put Methodist up by ten. Layla Weisenfeld, Kennedy Martin and Ainsley McGinn kept the score rising with a goal each before halftime.
  • With the Monarchs firmly in control, the scoring slowed tremendously as the game saw just five second-half goals. Macey Blackburn put the first goal in for Methodist in the third quarter, receiving a pass from Kayla Nee for the score. Brevard scored next while up a player, then Martin scored another for Methodist on an up-chance.
  • The Monarchs were down a player for their lone fourth-quarter score, as Blackburn fed Maddie Hagler for the goal. Up by 15, Methodist drained the clock while holding the Tornados to just one more score.
