Monarchs Move to Semifinals With Win Over Brevard

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  For the second time in three days, the Methodist women's lacrosse team took down Brevard College – this time defeating the Tornados in the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament. With a 23-8 victory, the Monarchs earned their 12th win of the season (the most wins in a single season in program history) and advance to the semifinals.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Brevard, 23-8
Records: Methodist 12-5, Brevard 11-6
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist struck first as senior Keegan Foyles assisted Mikayla Ramos for a score. That lead escaped quickly as Brevard recorded the next three goals to go ahead 3-1. Following a timeout taken by Methodist, Kennedy Martin needed just 13 seconds to gain control of the ball, get up field and score to answer the run by the Tornados. The goal ignited the Monarch offense, which scored seven more goals before the end of the first period – two more by Kennedy, one for Ramos, one for Foyles, and three by Layla Weisenfeld – to give Methodist a 9-3 edge.
  • Methodist's scoring streak extended to 13 goals as the Monarchs scored the first five goals of the second quarter, including scores on free position attempts by both Ramos and Tia Marlinghaus. Up 14-3, the Monarchs conceded two goals to Brevard before the Tornados scored an own-goal just three seconds before halftime to boost Methodist's lead back to ten goals.
  • With Ashley Fuentes relieving Jem Golombeski in goal for Methodist, Brevard led the third period off with a free position score, but Martin was quick to respond with her third goal of the game. She was followed by Ramos, who notched back-to-back goals for her fifth and sixth scores of the contest. The Monarchs allowed one more third-quarter goal for the Tornados, then produced the last three goals of the period – one for Macey Blackburn, another for Marlinghaus, and a free-position goal for Ainsley McGinn.
  • The fourth quarter saw just three scores as Methodist found the back of the net two times to Brevard's one. Marlinghaus scored the 22nd goal of the game for the Monarchs early in the period, then with under three minutes remaining, McGinn put an exclamation point on the outing with a final score and an energetic celebration.
FAST FACTS
  • With three caused turnovers on the day, Kennedy Martin becomes the program record holder for caused turnovers in a single season with 49, passing Sarah Erwin, who totaled 48 in 2018. Martin's incredible stat line also included 10 draw controls, seven ground balls, four goals (on four shots) and one assist.

  • The Monarchs took advantage of their free position attempts, scoring four times in seven tries.
