Jordan Walks it Off as Monarchs Win One on Senior Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  In a senior-day split, the Methodist baseball team fell to Pfeiffer University in game one of Sunday's doubleheader but held on for a walk-off win in game two. The Monarchs were defeated 5-2 in the first contest, then outscored the Falcons 7-6 in the second.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 5-2; Methodist def. Pfeiffer 7-6
Records: Methodist 27-8 (USA South 13-5), Pfeiffer 13-18 (9-9)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field, Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pfeiffer posted one run in the first frame of the first game, jumping out to a 1-0 lead. The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the fourth, when Rob Wilkerson and Wesley Hall recorded back-to-back singles to place runners on first and third. Gavin Wheeler was the next man up, laying down a sacrifice bunt to bring one run home.
  • With the score tied at 1-1, Pfeiffer's Brady Parker launched a two-run homerun to retake the lead. Parker helped extend that lead in the seventh inning, sending the ball to right-center field during his next at-bat for a double that scored two more runs. Trailing 5-1, the Monarchs were held hitless in the seventh and eighth innings and recorded just one run in the ninth.
  • The Falcons were the first on the scoreboard again in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the second inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Caleb Rogers doubled to left-center field to score Caleb Greene and tie the game at 1-1.
  • Methodist's offense started clicking in the fifth as Jackson Deal recorded a leadoff single. Jacob Austin followed him with a single, then Wilkerson followed suit to load the bases. Hall was the fourth batter in a row to record a hit, doubling to right-center field to score two runs and move Wilkerson to third, where he scored from during Wheeler's subsequent sacrifice fly. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Hall was brought home by Charles Jordan, who singled up the middle to record Methodist's fourth RBI of the inning.
  • The Monarchs gave up one run in the top of the sixth on a solo homerun, then matched that run with one in the bottom of the inning as Austin batted in Rogers. Ian Bingham took the mound for the Monarchs in the seventh, giving up a three-run homerun to the Falcons – their third homer of the day. With Tanner Simpson pitching for Methodist in the eighth, Pfeiffer found the one run it needed to tie the game at 6-6.
  • Methodist was unable to muster up any offense in the bottom of the eighth, but was granted got one last shot after Chase Carroll pitched a scoreless top of the ninth with two strikeouts. Wilkerson led off the final frame with a walk, then moved to second on a sac bunt by Hall. Cameron Seagroves pushed Wilkerson to third with a softly-hit single to the third baseman, then Jordan finished the job, laying down a bunt that allowed Wilkerson to slide safely into home plate.
