Methodist Picks Up Conference Win at Southern Virginia

BUENA VISTA, Va.  On Saturday morning, Methodist University women's tennis took on Southern Virginia University in a USA South Athletic Conference match. The Monarchs remain perfect in league play after defeating the Knights 7-2 at the SVU Tennis Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Megan Kidd & Valeria Matute got Methodist on the scoreboard first with an 8-2 win on doubles court three against Grace Howell & Clara Seamons of Southern Virginia. The Knights knotted up the match score, 1-1, following Paula Snelson & Jillian Arnold 8-4 victory over the Monarchs own Toni Lany & Veva Willocks, in the battle of the No. 1s.
  • On court two versus SVU's Nadia Molanphy & Campbell Bueler, Kamdyn Balko & Cailin Cifra edged out an 8-6 win for Methodist and gave a 2-1 match lead heading into singles action.
  • Matute, of the Monarchs, made quick work of the Knights Molanphy by beating her 6-0, 6-1 in No. 4 singles. On court five, Luciana Forma (MU) swept Howell (SVU) with a pair of 6-0 set scores.
  • Clinching the match, 5-1, for Methodist was Willocks after winning both of her 6-2 sets against Seamons of Southern Virginia. Cifra picked up another win (6-2, 6-3) for the Monarchs over the Knights Bueler, in No. 2 singles.
  • The final Methodist victory came from Kidd on court three as she defeated Arnold of Southern Virginia 6-1, 6-2.
  • The only Knight win, in singles play, came from Snelson on court one against Lany of the Monarchs. The first set was close, 7-6 (7-2), and had to be determined with a tiebreaker. The second set score was 6-3.
UP NEXT
Methodist takes the court again on Wednesday as the Monarchs welcome William Peace University to the Gene Clayton Tennis Center for a USA South contest. The match is scheduled for 3 PM.
