HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a back-and-forth battle to start the first set, Methodist collected three straight points to take a 5-2 lead. Sewanee managed the next streak, winning three points in a row to tie the set. A kill by Jeanana Fowler gave the Monarchs an edge before the Tigers rattled off another three-point run, followed by another three-point run by the Monarchs that saw two more kills by Fowler.
- Continuing to exchange lead after lead, Methodist found itself up 21-19. Sewanee won the ensuing five points, finally lending one to the Monarchs before claiming victory in the first frame.
- Down a set, Methodist took the first point of the second set. Sticking neck and neck again, the teams fought to a 7-7 score before Sewanee pieced together six straight points. Though the Tigers found themselves ahead by as many as eight points (17-9), the Monarchs collected 11 out of the next 14 (with two service aces from Hannah Hewett and one from Julia Mundy) to retie the set, this time at 20-20.
- Trading one and two points at a time, kills by Fowler, Aniyah Tate and Jamie Holton pushed the set to 27-27 before the Tigers pulled away.
- Methodist trailed again in the third set before two more Hewett aces contributed to a four-point swing for the Monarchs, giving them a 10-8 advantage. As with the first two sets, the teams continued to swap leads. This time, once Methodist went up 20-19, the Monarchs held onto the lead until the set was complete thanks to two services aces from Holton and another kill by Fowler.
- Sewanee erupted in the fourth set, sailing to an 11-3 lead. Holton recorded four more kills on Methodist's way to 11 points, but the Monarchs still trailed by five, and that was the closest they got. The Tigers worked swiftly as they won nine of the last 13 points to close out the match.
