Youth Movement: Monarchs Cruise Past Kean With Four Goals by Freshmen

GALLOWAY, N.J.  Back for day two of the Stockton Classic, Methodist saw shots turn to goals as the Monarchs drilled in four scores to Kean's two. Freshman Yaneli Sanchez notched a hat-trick, while fellow first-year Jocelyn Tavira Gallardo recorded her first collegiate goal.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Kean, 4-2
Records: Methodist 1-1, Kean 0-2
Location: Larry James Stadium; Galloway, N.J.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist struck first as Sanchez was quick to score, sending her second shot of the day into the net from roughly 30 yards out after receiving a pass from freshman Brooke Hunter. The score gave the Monarchs a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the match.
  • As the Monarchs bombarded Kean's keeper with the first six shots of the game, Tavira Gallardo was next to find net, sneaking in a score on the lower left side during the 31st minute. With under a minute remaining in the half, the Cougars responded with a goal to make the score 2-1.
  • It didn't take much time for Sanchez to fire up again in the second half, banging in another goal off a pass from Corrine Shovlain to give Methodist another two-goal advantage.
  • Kean scored once more in the 69th minute to make it a one-score game once again, but it was none other than Sanchez who iced the match with her third goal of the contest, driving the ball into the upper right corner in the 81st minute after a feed from junior Kelsey Burge.
NUMBERS
  • After taking eight shots in Friday's match versus Stockton and walking away scoreless, Sanchez put up nine shots during this three-goal effort.
  • Sanchez becomes Methodist's first player to record a hat-trick since Capri Clark dominated on Oct. 3, 2017 in a 3-1 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan University.
  • Sophomore Kaylea Carter played all 90 minutes in goal for the first time in her Methodist career, making a career-high seven saves.
