FAYETTVILLE, N.C. Methodist University women's soccer team played its home opener on Wednesday afternoon, in non-conference action, against Averett University. It was an exciting time inside Duggins Soccer Stadium as the Monarchs came away with a 2-0 victory over the Cougars.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- On a hot & sunny afternoon, both squads appeared to be evenly matched at the start of the contest. Methodist though shifted the momentum in its favor starting in the 17th minute.
- Reining USA South Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week, Yaneli Sanchez, scored what is categorized as the game-winner. She gained possession of the ball on the far side of the field then dribbled past her defender before beating the keeper to her left and hitting the back-right corner of the net.
- The Monarchs second goal came in the 53rd minute of the match. Sanchez juked out her defender to give herself an open cross attempt. The cross, going left to right, was settled by Corrine Shovlain and kicked into the right corner of the net.
NUMBERS
- Methodist's offense saw 12 different shot takers, including five that fired one on goal, in this match while Averett had five.
- Each side split times with their goalies in this match. For the Monarchs sophomores Carolina Simpkins and Kaylea Carter each played 45 minutes. Simpkins would finish with three saves while Carter had two.
- This win adds to Methodist current winning streak over the Cougars. The Monarchs are 10-0-1 over the past 11 games between these two teams.
