Monarchs Shut Out by Southern Virginia

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Fresh off a 3–0 victory on Tuesday, the Methodist women's soccer team took the home pitch on Saturday seeking a win over Southern Virginia University. However, the Monarchs were held without a goal, falling to the Knights by a score of 1–0.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Southern Virginia def. Methodist, 1–0
Records: Methodist 4–6–0 (3–2–0 USA South), Southern Virginia 5–5–3 (4–0–1 USA South)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first shot on goal of the match was saved by Methodist goalkeeper Carolina Simpkins. Just three minutes later, Southern Virginia's Abbie Klusman delivered a right–to–left pass to Matia Murray, who struck the ball this time in a way that Simpkins was unable to stop, giving the Knights a 1–0 advantage.
  • The Monarch defense settled down following the score, but Methodist's offense struggled to get into a rhythm. The team attempted just two shots in the first half, though both came from well beyond the box.
  • Methodist was held to two more shots in the second half — neither of which were on target.
NUMBERS
  • It was a physical contest with 24 fouls in total.
  • This is just the second time all year that the Monarchs failed to register a shot on goal.
  • Both of Methodist's losses in USA South play have been 1–0 defeats.
