Aromin Nets Three as Monarchs Shut Out Shaw

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Taking on their only Division II opponent of the season, the Methodist men's soccer team handled business while resting most of their usual starters in a 6–0 shutout against Shaw University on Wednesday evening. The Monarchs' attack was led by freshman Tyler Aromin, who notched a hat trick in the victory.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist defeats Shaw, 6-0
Records: Methodist 6-5-3, Shaw 3-8-0
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Aromin scored the first goal of the match (the first of his collegiate career), taking a pass from Caleb Mott (which came on a free kick from beyond midfield) and delivering a right–footed strike high into the left side of the net in the 13th minute of play.
  • In the 21st minute, Matthew Walker made a leaping save at the top of the penalty box, facing Dillon McCrimmon one on one as he jumped up to keep McCrimmon's header out of the net.
  • With less than three minutes to go in the half, Charles Drew scored Methodist's second goal of the night from just a few feet out, sneaking a shot in between the left post and the goalkeeper.
  • Drew was the first to find the back of the net in the second half, heading a long pass by Mott from near the right corner into the goal.
  • Methodist's fourth goal of the night came in the 70th minute, when a heavy offensive attack led to a shot by Harrison Broome that was saved by the Shaw goalkeeper. However, the deflection rolled right towards the foot of a charging Camden Hancox, who delivered a strike from the left side of the frame that the keeper was unable to get back up for in time.
  • Aromin's second score of the night came quickly following a Methodist free kick. The Monarchs moved with haste, finding Aidan McMulkin in space high above the box. McMulkin, who had just entered the match less than a minute prior, threaded a pass past two Shaw defenders towards Aromin, who received the ball off his chest and fired a shot off after just one bounce. The shot rolled into the bottom right corner to give the Monarchs a 5–goal advantage.
  • Less than two minutes later, the Monarchs were presented with another offensive opportunity. With the ball passed into the box, Kellen Pace attempted a shot that was blocked by a Shaw defender. As the ball bounced back in his direction, Pace used his head to direct the ball towards the feet of Aromin. Aromin collected the ball with his left foot and needed just one touch from his right to secure the sixth score for Methodist.
NUMBERS
  • Aromin is the second player to record a hat trick for the Monarchs this season, following in the footsteps of fellow freshman Mathias Navar, who scored three times versus Warren Wilson.
  • Entering Wednesday's match, Matthew Walker had made just five total saves on the season in his five appearances. The junior tallied five saves while keeping a clean sheet for the full 90 minutes.
