Methodist Edges Out Pfeiffer on the Road

MISENHEIMER, N.C.  Methodist University men's soccer was the road team on Tuesday night as the team played Pfeiffer University in USA South action. One goal was all the Monarchs needed to take down the Falcons 1-0 on their home pitch, Lefko-Mills Field.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist defeats Pfeiffer, 1-0
Records: Methodist 5-4-2 (2-0), Pfeiffer 2-4-2 (0-2)
Location: Lefko-Mills Field; Misenheimer, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Defense was on display at the start of the match, as each team could only generate one shot through almost 20 minutes of gameplay.
  • With limited shot attempts, Methodist freshman Cameron Lambert successfully got the ball in the back of the net with his first shot of the game in the 20th minute. On a Monarch corner kick, sophomore Garrett Panos headed the volley up in the air, and with no one around him, Lambert bicycle-kicked the ball past a diving Pfeiffer goalie.
  • Fellow freshman Mathias Navar nearly doubled Methodist's score when there were less than five minutes left in the first half, but the Falcons keeper was able to stop the ball for the save.
  • Josh Mott, a sophomore, would be the only Monarch to record a shot on goal during the second half, while Pfeiffer registered two shots on target but none got past sophomore goalie Trey Gohr as he kept a clean sheet for Methodist.
NUMBERS
  • This is the second time Lambert's goal would be the game-winner this season.
  • This was the fourth shutout of the season for the Monarchs, and Gohr has been a factor in each of them. Tonight marks his second solo shutout though.
  • Senior Casey Atwell led the Methodist offense with three shots, but only one would be on target. Lambert was right behind him with two shots, one SOG.
UP NEXT
Methodist is off until Saturday, October 5, when the Monarchs welcome USA South foe Brevard College to Duggins Soccer Stadium. The match is set for 2 PM.
