FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Looking to avenge its semifinals loss in the 2023 conference tournament, Methodist University men's soccer hosted USA South foe Brevard College on Saturday afternoon. The Monarchs took a 1-0 lead into the break but could not maintain it in the second half and had to settle for a 1-1 draw against the Tornados inside Duggins Soccer Stadium.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist tied Brevard, 1-1
Records: Methodist 5-4-3 (2-0-1), Brevard 4-2-2 (1-0-1)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Brevard took a few shots in the early stages of the contest, but none on net. Recording the first shot on goal, in the 12th minute, was sophomore Josh Mott of Methodist, which the Tornados keeper saved.
- A few minutes later, sophomore Steven Floyd put a ball in the goal to give the Monarchs a 1-0 advantage in the 15th minute. Methodist was awarded a free kick near midfield, and senior Casey Atwell was the Monarch to take the kick. He would volley the ball to freshman Cameron Lambert, who headed the ball from the right-side post to Floyd to finish it off, with a header of his own.
- In the second half, the physicality of the match picked up to the point where multiple fouls were called and cards were issued to both squads.
- Still with a 1-0 lead, the Methodist defense limited Brevard's offense to just one shot on goal in the second. In the 75th minute, though, the Tornados registered their second one of the half and it was the equalizing goal by Estevan Berto.
- Monarch goalie Trey Gohr, a sophomore, did face one more Brevard threat a couple of minutes later, but he put an end to the threat with another save.
NUMBERS
- The Tornados registered more shots, including shots on goal, than Methodist in the contest. Brevard recorded ten, with four reaching the net, while the Monarchs had six and two, respectively.
- Floyd has now scored a goal in three out of the last four Methodist games, and he currently leads the team with six total goals this season.
