NEWPORT NEWS, Va. Taking on nationally–ranked Christopher Newport University in a non–conference contest on Tuesday, the Methodist women's soccer team scored first before conceding five unanswered goals.
The undefeated Captains were ranked No. 2 in the nation following the release of the latest United Soccer Coaches poll earlier on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kelsey Burge put Methodist on the scoreboard first, netting a goal from inside the box in the 10th minute of play. In the 23rd minute, the Captains equalized the score with a long–range free kick.
- A 1–1 score at halftime was a welcome sight to the Monarchs but served as a wake–up call for Christopher Newport. The Captains came out of the break with a refreshed intensity, scoring twice in the first eight minutes of the second half.
- Keeping the ball away from the Monarchs for a majority of the period, CNU tacked on two more scores before the final buzzer.
NUMBERS
- Methodist's lone goal ended up coming on the team's only shot attempt of the entire match. Meanwhile, the Captains fired off a total of 46 shots (23 in each half), which are the most the Monarchs have allowed in a match this season.
- Methodist goalkeepers Carolina Simpkins and Kaylea Carter combined for 13 saves on the night, which marks the most saves in a single match for the Monarchs this season. Simpkins recorded six saves while giving up just one goal in the first half. Carter logged seven saves but was responsible for Christopher Newport's four second–half scores.
