Methodist Eclipses 20 Wins After Defeating Pfeiffer on the Road

MISENHEIMER, N.C.  For this first time since 2015, Methodist University volleyball won its 20th match of the season after the Monarchs went on the road and defeated the Falcons of Pfeiffer University 3-1, in USA South Athletic Conference action.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Methodist def. Pfeiffer, 3-1 (25-13, 25-14, 17-25, 25-8)
Records: Methodist 20-4 (11-3 USA South), Pfeiffer 5-20 (2-11)
Location: Merner Gym; Misenheimer, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The trio of Jeanana Fowler (4), Savannah Hovander (4), and Jamie Holton (3) recorded multiple kills to help Methodist claim a 15-7 advantage in the opening set.  Following a Pfeiffer timeout, the Monarchs continued with their hot hitting percentage as six of the last ten points were kills, two a piece by J. Fowler, Hovander, and Railyn Fowler.
  • Hovander was heavily involved in Methodist jumping out to a 7-2 lead to begin the set two, as she registered four kills and a block. A three-point swing got the Falcons back to within two, 7-5, but then the Monarchs utilized a 5-1 run to push their advantage to an eight-point difference, 16-8. Holton would take over for Methodist down the stretch as she tallied five kills.
  • From the start of the third set, the Monarchs could not create a rhythm. Pfeiffer was able to take a 5-1 lead and then continued to grow it into a 13-6 advantage. A four-point spurt got Methodist back to within three, 13-10, but that was closest the Monarchs got to the lead, as the Falcons kept steadily increasing their score before finishing off the set with four straight points.
  • The momentum that Pfeiffer gained in the previous set did not follow the team into the fourth set. Out of the ten points Methodist scored to begin the set, the Falcons gifted five of them due to several errors. The Monarchs then got back to their normal ways by getting the ball to their hitters, generating nine kills across the team's final 15 points.
MORE TO IT
  • Methodist had three hitters record 13+ kills in the match; Holton (17), Hovander (15), and J. Fowler (13).
  • In three of the four sets tonight, the Monarchs had a .357 or higher attack percentage.
  • Like she has in almost every match this season, Hannah Hewett led the game in assists with 44, averaging exactly 11 per set.
  • This is just the fourth team under head coach Eddie Matthews to reach the 20-win plateau, with the 2010, 2011, & 2015 teams being the others.
