Monarchs Clinch the Number Two Seed Following Win Against Battling Bishops

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University women's soccer ended its regular season on a high note as the Monarchs won a 1-0 decision on Wednesday night, hosting the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan University in a USA South Athletic Conference contest.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. N.C. Wesleyan, 1–0
Records: Methodist 8–7–0 (7–2–0 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 6–11–1 (3–5–1)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The lone Methodist goal was scored five minutes into the match, off the foot of senior Kelsey Burge and into the bottom left corner of the net. Near midfield, fellow senior Corrine Shovlain challenged an N.C. Wesleyan player for possession of the ball. After Shovlain gained control, she sent a tremendous through ball to Burge, who split between two Battling Bishop defenders before taking a shot from 13 yards out.
  • In the second half, Burge had two other great looks in an attempt to score her second goal. The first was off a pair of passes by junior Carolina Simpkins and Shovlain, allowing Burge to outrun N.C. Wesleyan's backline and have a one-on-one situation with the Battling Bishops' keeper. Burge, though, would kick the ball right into the bread basket of the goalie.
  • The second was after a great volley by Allye Carter, who kicked the ball up from the midfield line. Dropping right in front of a running Burge, she one-touched the ball to give her the space she needed for a shot but missed the net to the left.
NUMBERS
  • Burge, by herself, had just as many shots as N.C. Wesleyan took the entire match with four.
  • A quiet night in the net for Simpkins, as no saves were necessary, but she did register her sixth shutout of the season, a new career-high.
  • With the victory, Methodist extends its longest winning streak against the Battling Bishops, which now stands at 23 matches.
UP NEXT
