Monarchs Upended by Pacers in First Round of Conference Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Tuesday night started the first round of the 2024 USA South Volleyball Tournament, as Methodist University (No. 3 Seed) hosted William Peace University (No. 6 Seed) inside the March F. Riddle Center. In a surprising outcome, the Pacers were victorious after sweeping the Monarchs 3-0.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: William Peace def. Methodist, 3-0 (25–21, 26–24, 25–23)
Records: Methodist 23–6, William Peace 18-15
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • William Peace set the tone in the opening game by racing out to a 9-3 lead. An exchange of points occurred for a bit before Methodist went on an 8-2 run to take a slight 17-16 advantage, senior Jeanana Fowler led the charge by contributing three kills and a block during the stretch. Following a couple more trade-off points by the two squads, the Pacers outscored the Monarchs 7-2 to take the first set.
  • The second set was a complete back-and-forth battle between the two teams, where neither side led by more than three points. William Peace had a 10-7 lead, but then a pair of Methodist kills by junior Jamie Holton and sophomore Savannah Hovander gave their team a 12-11 edge. Four quick Pacer points put them back in front, 15-12, until several errors allowed the Monarchs to tie the score up at 17-17. Methodist kept the score tight for the remainder of the set, causing three more tie-ups, but in the end, William Peace registered the necessary points to go up by two sets.
  • After the Pacers jumped out to a 6-2 lead to begin the third set, kills by Fowler (3) and Holton (2) during a 7-0 Monarch run gave them an 11-7 advantage. Then, in the blink of an eye, an 11-1 run by William Peace completely changed the set. Down 21-15, Methodist battled back to get within one, 23-22, after going on a 7-2 run. The late Monarch push came to an end, though, as the Pacers recorded the final two points they needed to finish the upset.
MORE TO IT
  • Holton and Fowler each produced double-digit kills in the loss, respectively, 20 and 15. Following her last college match, Fowler's career kills total reached 1,291, the fourth-most in program history.
  • Blake O'Brien and Hannah Hewett also played in their final collegiate contest. O'Brien was tied for the match lead in digs with 14, bringing her total at Methodist to 1,217 (7th All-Time). Hewett's 37 assists led all players, and she will leave as the Monarch's All-Time assists leader with 4,549.
  • Even though Methodist had more kills than William Peace, 42 to 47, the Pacers bested the Monarchs in service aces (11 to 5), blocks (11 to 7), and hitting percentage (.265 to .205).
