Methodist Falls to Belhaven on Senior Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist University football team's 2024 campaign came to an end on Saturday with a USA South contest against Belhaven University, a game that saw the visiting Blazers defeat the Monarchs 26-3.

Before the opening kickoff, Methodist honored its 18 seniors in a pre-game ceremony.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Belhaven def. Methodist, 26-3
Records: Methodist 1-9 (1-7 USA South), Belhaven 5-4 (5-3)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • On its opening drive of the day, Belhaven marched 70 yards, on 12 plays, down the field to score the first points. Facing a 3rd-and-16, a pair of completed passes by quarterback Blake Kirby kept the Blazers' drive alive, then two plays later, D'Ante Gallashaw took the hand-off and reached the end zone from two yards out. The ensuing PAT would hit the left upright to keep it 6-0.
  • During the first two Methodist possessions, the Monarchs were inside Belhaven's 35-yard line, but a couple of costly mistakes, a fumble and an interception, led to no points.
  • After the Blazers added three points on Constantine Hontzas' field goal, Methodist registered its first points on a Samuel Andrae 22-yard FG. A 16- and 14-yard run by quarterback Ja'Lon Miller helped move the ball to Belhaven's side of the field, and then Miller connected with Tanner Zill on a 23-yard pass to spot the ball at the Blazers' nine-yard line. The Monarchs were unable to find the end zone, though, which prompted Andrae and the field goal unit.
  • Right before halftime, Belhaven scored its second touchdown on a 26-yard catch and run between Kirby and RJ Garrison, making the score 16-3.
  • The only points of the third quarter came on a 28-yard field goal by Hontzas of the Blazers.
  • Now down by 16 points, 19-3, Methodist faced a 3rd-and-24, and a 22-yard completion to Zill set the Monarchs up for a 4th-and-short near midfield early in the fourth quarter. The next play saw Miller just miss his intended target to force a turnover on downs and give the ball back to Belhaven.
  • Five plays later, Kirby found Jacobey James-Grace on the receiving end of a 15-yard touchdown throw.
MORE TO IT
  • The Blazer's defense held Methodist to 150 yards of total offense, 81 passing yards, and 69 rushing yards. Belhaven ran for 220 yards and passed for another 181 yards for a total of 401 yards of offense.
  • Linebacker Omar Goodwin had a game-high ten tackles, including a tackle for loss, with fellow backer Tyler Jackson right behind him with nine tackles and a tackle for loss. Defensive back Dominic Hyman also recorded his first career interception.
  • The Monarchs finish the season 1-9, with their lone win coming against Greensboro College back on September 21.
