CARY, N.C.  Suffering defeat against William Peace University for the second time this season, the Methodist men's soccer team saw its 2024 campaign come to a close on Saturday, falling in the First Round of the USA South Tournament. JUST THE FACTS
Final score: William Peace def. Methodist, 3-0
Records: Methodist 6-8-4, William Peace 7-6-3
Location: WakeMed Soccer Park; Cary, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist goalkeeper Trey Gohr recorded five saves through the first 30 minutes of play, doing his part to keep the match scoreless. In the same amount of time, the Monarchs attempted three shots but with just one on target, which was saved by William Peace goalkeeper Ayden Miller.
  • In the 32nd minute of play, the Monarchs committed a foul inside the penalty box, leading to a successful penalty shot for the Pacers.
  • William Peace netted two goals in the second half – the first of which was a hot shot from about 15 yards out. The final goal scored by the Pacers came after the back line of the Methodist defense allowed a long pass to get by. Gohr charged towards the oncoming attacker at the top of the box, but he couldn't get there in time and had the ball chipped over his head.
NUMBERS
  • Gohr finished with six saves, which were his second–most in a single–game this season.
  • Freshman Cameron Lambert led the Monarchs in shot attempts with two of the team's six.
  • This was just the third time all season that the Monarchs allowed three or more goals, and their first time losing by more than two scores.
