BUENA VISTA, Va.  Facing its first USA South opponent of the season on Friday, the Methodist women's basketball team suffered a 13–point loss at the hands of the Southern Virginia University Knights. JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Southern Virginia def. Methodist, 72–59
Records: Methodist 0-4 (0–1 USA South), Southern Virginia 3-2 (1–0 USA South)
Location: Knight Arena; Buena Vista, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist's first basket was made by Melissa D'Oleo, who tied the score at 2–2. Playing from behind, the Monarchs made the score 9–8 with back–to–back buckets by Kiley Hicks and Aneesa Irizarry, but Southern Virginia finished the first quarter on a 9–3 run. Four Monarchs attempted a three–pointer during the first period, but none saw their shot fall.
  • An 11–point run to start the second quarter put Methodist down by 18. The Monarchs scored just six points during the period, with Jillian Peterson responsible for four of those and Rebecca McGaughnea contributing the remaining two.
  • Down by 22 entering halftime, Methodist came out of the break with a new energy, outscoring SVU 14–5 as Kiley Hicks paced the team with six points during that span. However, the Knights closed the period on a 10–3 run, taking advantage of the free–throw line by making all six of their attempts.
  • The fourth quarter proved to be Methodist's best offensive period, as the team made 11 of 19 attempts from the field. Kayleen Grullon kicked the scoring off with the first three points of the quarter, then she passed the torch to Peterson and McGaughnea who combined for 18 of the team's 25 points in the final frame.
MORE TO IT
  • The Monarchs went 2–for–10 from behind the arc and just 5–for–11 at the free–throw line. Their clip of 38.2% from the field — while lower than SVU's 42.1% — was their best mark through four games this season.
  • Jillian Peterson led all Methodist scorers with 16 points, making 7 shots on 14 attempts. Rebecca McGaughnea finished next in line with 13 points on 6–for–10 shooting.
  • Kiley Hicks put together her best performance so far this season, recording nine points, six rebounds and four assists.
