LYNCHBURG, Va. The visiting Methodist University men's basketball team played a non-conference game against the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday, and it was a valiant effort by the Monarchs but they still found themselves on the losing end of a 66-55 decision to the home Hornets.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Lynchburg def. Methodist, 66–55
Records: Methodist 2-3, Lynchburg 3-2
Location: Turner Gymnasium; Lynchburg, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Ke Edwards scored the opening points of the ballgame for Methodist but then Lynchburg recorded the next eight to take an 8-2 advantage. Zac Sledge, two free throws, and Derrion Hicklen, a three-pointer, combined for the next five Monarch points to bring their team back to within three, 10-7.
- The two sides would exchange baskets over the course of the next seven minutes of game action before a layup by Tyler Buggs began a 6-0 run for the Hornets, and give them a ten point lead, 26-16. A second 6-0 run put Lynchburg up by 14 points, its largest lead of the game, but before the halftime break, Edwards (4) and David McCallum Jr. (2) of Methodist scored six of the last ten points to make it a 12-point affair, 36-24.
- Early in the second half, the Hornets did put themselves up by 14 once again until a 7-2 run by the Monarchs trimmed the deficit down to single digits, 42-33. Eventually, a Piercen Young three-pointer gave Lynchburg a 12-point edge but it was quickly dropped to ten by Methodist after a half court alley-oop pass from senior Chance Minott to Edwards.
- With five and a half minutes left in the contest, the Monarchs made it a four-point ballgame, 56-52, following a McCallum Jr. three-point play and a pair of triples by Edwards. The Hornets would register a quick four points to put them up by eight, but then a basket by Hicklen kept Methodist within striking distance, 60-54, with a little under four minutes remaining. Alas, Young recorded the final dagger for Lynchburg with his made shot from behind the arc.
MORE TO IT
- Edwards led all scorers with 18 points as he was one of two Methodist hoopsters to reach double figures, with Hicklen (13) being the other. Sledge also had an impressive game as he had eight points, seven rebounds, two blocks, and a steal.
- The Monarchs have now dropped their last six matchups to the Hornets.
- Lynchburg's transition game was better than Methodist as the Hornets recorded 16 fast break points compared to the two by the Monarchs.
