FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. For a second consecutive day, Methodist University women's basketball played host to a fellow USA South Athletic Conference foe, this time against Brevard College. After taking a double-digit lead into the fourth quarter, the Monarchs had to fend off a Tornados comeback attempt to pick up a 54-51 win on Wednesday.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Brevard, 54–51
Records: Methodist 4-5 (2-1 USA South), Brevard 8-3 (3-1)
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Neither team shot the ball well in the first quarter, and that led to a slow start. The score was knotted up at 4-4, with under four minutes left in the period, until a three-pointer by Christena Rhone gave Brevard its first lead of the contest. Methodist briefly reclaimed its advantage following a pair of buckets by Kayleen Grullon, but then two Tornado free throws put them back in front by one.
- Early in the second quarter, Brevard would increase its lead to three points, 13-10, thanks to a layup by Naliyah Boyce. Then, in the blink of an eye, a couple of layups by Aneesa Irizarry gave the Monarchs a one-point edge. Across the next six minutes of game action, four more lead changes and two tie-ups occurred before a Melissa D'Oleo basket gave Methodist a two-point advantage, 23-21, into halftime.
- The Monarchs began the third quarter on a 10-5 to give themselves a seven-point cushion, but then four unanswered points by the Tornados brought them to within three of the lead, 33-30. Methodist, though, was able to close out the period on an 11-3 run and head into the fourth quarter with an 11-point advantage, 44-33.
- After another basket by Grullon, back-to-back threes by Brevard trimmed the deficit to just seven points, 48-41, with 6:45 left in the period. A wide-open layup by Rebecca McGaughnea briefly put the Monarchs up by nine, but then Jada Petty-Wilkins registered four of the next six Tornado points to make it a three-point game. McGaughnea and Kiley Hicks recorded the final Methodist points to give their team a two-possession advantage until a Brevard triple by Josie Hester cut it to one with 46 seconds left.
- The Tornados did get the ball back one last time, after a missed Monarch basket, with less than 20 seconds. Petty-Wilkins drove into the lane to try to get the layup but missed, and Methodist was able to secure the rebound and the victory.
MORE TO IT
- Leading the Monarchs in scoring was Hicks, who had a team-high 13 points. She also co-led the team in rebounds with eight while adding three steals.
- Irizarry had a nice overall game as she recorded six points, eight rebounds, four steals, a block, and a career-high nine assists.
- Both teams committed 18 turnovers, but it was Methodist (15) that was able to generate more points off turns than Brevard (9).
