FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Following a 12-day holiday break, Methodist University women's basketball returned to the hardwood to host Averett University in a non-conference game. The Cougars' first-quarter shooting kept them in the game, but then the Monarchs took control and rolled to a 70–45 win on Monday.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Averett, 70–45
Records: Methodist 5-5, Averett 1-10
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rebecca McGaughnea recorded the first points of the ballgame for Methodist before Averett claimed a two-point edge following back-to-back layups. The two teams then traded shots for the next several minutes until the scoreboard read 13-12 in favor of the Cougars. With almost three and a half minutes left in the period, a pair of free throws by McGaughnea sparked a 9-0 run for the Monarchs and put them in front by eight until an Averett three-pointer by DaiShaundria Giggett cut the score down to 21-16 at the end of the opening frame.
- Methodist increased its advantage to double digits after Kiley Hicks registered four of the six points to begin the second quarter. Giggett would keep the Cougars within striking distance of the lead by recording the next four points to make it a seven-point game, 29-22. Then the Monarch duo of Kayleen Grullon (5) and Arriana White (3) combined for eight points to send the home team into the locker room with a 37-24 halftime advantage.
- Averett came out strong to start the third quarter as the Cougars outscored Methodist 8-4 to bring the deficit down to single digits, 41-32, and force the Monarchs to call a timeout. Following the timeout, White scored five of the next seven Methodist points before an additional 8-0 run ballooned the lead to a 20-point difference, 56-36.
- In the fourth quarter, Averett was held to seven points by the Monarchs, while they scored 14 themselves. Methodist scored most of its points during a 10-0 run, with Korin Gladden scoring seven.
