Monarchs Trade Wins With Messiah on Day Two

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Playing two games of seven innings each, the Methodist baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader with Messiah, dropping the first game 3-1 before producing a come-from-behind win in the second game. The Monarchs rallied from down 2-0 to claim a 4-2 win and their first victory of the season.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Messiah def. Methodist, 3-1; Methodist def. Messiah, 4-2
Records: Methodist 1-2, Messiah 2-1
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • After forcing the first two batters of the second inning into outs, Andrew Baur loaded the bases. With a failed pickoff attempt to third base that saw the ball roll past the third baseman, Messiah snuck in its first run. Two walks later, the Falcons went up 2-0.
  • With two runners on in the top of the third, Methodist conceded a third run on a groundout to second base that scored one.
  • Caleb Greene started the bottom of the fourth inning with a double down the left-field line, then advanced to third as Jackson Deal grounded out to first base. A Hunter Hollman sac fly delivered the first run of the game for the Monarchs.
  • Colton Ide relieved Baur, pitching clean innings in the sixth and seventh for Methodist, but the Monarch offense left three runners on base in the same span without bringing any more home.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • Brandon Humphreys pitched three scoreless innings to start the second game of the day, but the Methodist bats produced no runs during those innings either. In the top of the fourth, Messiah scored its first run of the game on an error.
  • Josh Plisko entered in the top of the fifth, making his second relief appearance in as many days. With bases loaded and only one out, Plisko forced the next two batters to ground out, with the first scoring a run.
  • After Plisko pitched a scoreless sixth, the Monarchs went to work on their best offensive inning of the weekend. Caleb Greene got things started with a single to left center, closely imitated by Jackson Deal in the next at-bat. Laying down a bunt, Hunter Hollman advanced both runners and found himself safe at first. With one out, Banks Hartman singled to first base, scoring a run. Banks Engle and Brandon Mauger drew walks to score Methodist's next two runs before Justin Blunt added insurance with a sac fly to right field.
  • The Monarchs called upon the closer, Chase Carroll, to pitch the seventh. The reliable reliever took five batters to deliver three outs, securing the win for Methodist.

STAT FACTS
  • Two freshmen recorded one RBI each for the Monarchs in the game-two victory, while a third freshman scored a run for Methodist.
  • After being credited with the loss on Friday, Josh Plisko sought redemption on Saturday, coming away with the win after taking care of business in 1.2 innings of work.

UP NEXT
Methodist returns to Armstrong-Shelley Field on Friday, Feb. 23 to kick off the Diamond Invitational. The Monarchs will face Penn State Abington, followed by games against Neumann and DeSales on Saturday and Sunday.
