JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Penn State Abington, 19-0 (8 Inns.)
Records: Methodist 2-2, Penn State Abington 0-1
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist got the scoring going with a four-run second inning. With two outs & a runner on second, the starting pitcher for PSU Abington struggled with his command on the mound by hitting one batter then walking the next two Methodist players to allow one run to score.
- The very next Monarch batter, Jackson Deal, then connected on a 2-RBI single to make it 3-0. A pass ball by the catcher would allow Caleb Greene to scamper on home for the fourth Methodist run.
- The Monarchs would be held scoreless until the seventh, when the team added 10 more runs. In a inning that saw Methodist cycle through the lineup, catcher Hunter Hollman, who led off the bottom of the 7th off with a triple, came around to score twice while also drawing an RBI walk.
- With Methodist up big, head coach Tom Austin was able to get players that do not see a lot of playing time some action in the eighth inning, where the Monarchs registered five more runs.
- Making the most of their opportunity was junior Austin Williams and freshman Colton Rutledge, who each recorded their first hit this season. For Rutledge, it was also his first collegiate hit of his young career.
MORE STATS
- Methodist finished with more walks & RBIs (14) than the team had hits (13).
- Junior Jackson Deal continues his great start to the 2024 season by going 2 for 4 at the plate, with two walks, and three RBIs. Others Monarchs that had a multi-hit game were Hollman and Caleb Rogers.
- Getting the starting nod, and the victory, for Methodist was Kyle Molivas. He tossed seven shutout innings while allowing two hits and struck out four Penn State Abington batters.
