FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Challenging the Knights of Neumann on Day 2 of the 2024 Diamond Invitational, the Methodist baseball team grasped a one-run win to move to 2-0 on the weekend. The Monarchs needed just seven hits on their way to a 4-3 victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist's Andrew Baur set the tone in the top of the first, striking out all three batters he faced. In the next inning, he collected two more strikeouts.
- The Monarchs struck in the bottom of the second inning, recording three-straight singles off the bats of Brandon Mauger, Banks Engle and Caleb Rogers. Rogers' hit scored Mauger, giving Methodist a 1-0 advantage.
- Baur put away two more batters on strikes during the top of the third, putting him at seven strikeouts for the game – tied for his career best. In the fifth inning, he notched one more, giving him a career-high eight strikeouts on the day.
- The Monarchs conceded an unearned run in the top of the sixth inning but made up for it with a run in the bottom of the frame, with Rogers bringing Mauger home again. In the seventh, Mauger recorded his third hit in four at-bats, pushing home two runs on a single through the left side.
- With Jackson Kuhn on the mound for his third inning of work, Methodist gave up two runs in the top of the ninth. Josh Plisko entered the game with two outs and a runner on first. The right-hander allowed one hit before forcing an infield popup for the final out.
STAT FACTS
- Freshman Brandon Mauger had an excellent outing, batting 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Caleb Roges was the only other Monarch to record a multi-hit performance (2-for-4).
- Methodist's pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts while permitting just eight hits and one walk.
