Monarchs Get Walk-Off Win on Final Day of Diamond Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist University baseball had a very successful weekend and finished off its 2024 Diamond Invitational with a 3-2 walk-off win against DeSales University on Sunday, February 25.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Methodist def. DeSales, 3-2
Records: Methodist 4-2, DeSales 4-2
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Through the first three innings, the Bulldogs were able to get a 2-0 lead. They scored the opening run within the first four batters as the leadoff man reach due to a Monarch error before coming around to home.
  • DeSales second run came in the third inning. The Bulldogs led off with a double followed by a sacrifice bunt and a groundout to drive the run in.
  • In the fourth inning, Hunter Hollman registered Methodist second hit of the ballgame after recording just one hit through the first three. The very next batter was Tristen Melvin, who doubled to deep right field to put Monarch runners on second and third base. A sac bunt by rookie Banks Hartman then scored Hollman.
  • The score stayed 2-1, in favor of DeSales, until the eighth inning. After narrowly beating the throw to prevent a double play, Caleb Greene stole second base to get himself into scoring position for Methodist. Two batters later, Greene scored from second on Hollman's RBI single.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Greene came back up to the plate with base loaded and two outs. The Bulldogs were one pitch away from forcing extra innings, but Greene was able to draw the game-winning walk and get the win for the Monarchs.
STAT FACTS
  • Hollman led all batters with his three-hit day. Melvin and Brandon Mauger were other Methodist players that had multi-hit performances.
  • Picking up his first Monarch win this season was Chase Carroll. He pitched in the top of the ninth and held DeSales offense at bay.
  • Brandon Humphreys and Josh Plisko also pitched well for Methodist. Humphreys, who got the start, gave up two runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out six Bulldogs through six innings of work. Plisko came in relief for two innings, surrendering one hit and two walks while striking out one batter.
