LYNCHBURG, Va. Methodist softball opened up its 2024 season on the road at the University of Lynchburg in a non-conference doubleheader. The Monarchs' excitement of a new season was quickly soured with a pair of losses, 10-1 (5 Innings) & 6-2, to the Hornets.
THE ESSENTIALS

Records: Methodist 0-2; Lynchburg 2-0
Location: Moon Field; Lynchburg, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The two teams were held scoreless through the first two innings until Lynchburg opened it up with seven runs in the bottom half of the third. Two walks and a Methodist error loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly scored the first Hornet run. Two batters later, a single followed by a walk drove in two more runs then back-to-back doubles brought in the other four runs.
- The Monarchs lone run came in top half of the fourth as Alyssa Rivas laid down a sacrifice bunt to allow teammate Devan Wenger to trot home. In the bottom half, Lynchburg scored three more runs before pitching a clean fifth inning to secure its first win of the day.
- Game 2 saw the Hornets get on the scoreboard first once again with a run in the second inning followed by two in the third.
- A Hannah Lovick single & a couple of Lynchburg miscues gave the Monarchs a threat on third base. Up comes Alexandra Edwards, who sent a fly ball to right field to get the sac fly, and Methodist first run.
- The score stayed 3-1 until the sixth, when the Hornets added three more insurance runs. Now down 6-1, the Monarchs could only muster one additional run during their final at bats.
NUMBERS
- After a quiet first game, 0-2, Edwards went 2-for-2 with two doubles and an RBI in the second game.
- Also recording their first hits of 2024 for Methodist was Rachel Blanchard, Lovick, Sydney Sizemore, and Wenger.
