LYNCHBURG, Va. Playing on short rest after a Saturday doubleheader, the Methodist softball team split its Sunday series with Randolph, dropping the first game 8-0 before claiming a huge victory in the second game. The Monarchs outscored the Wildcats 16-2 to earn their first win of the season.
THE ESSENTIALS

Records: Methodist 1-3; Randolph 1-1
Location: Randolph College Softball Field; Lynchburg, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Things did not work in Methodist's favor during the first game. Despite recording just one fewer hit than Randolph, the Monarchs left seven runners on base and didn't bring a single run home. Methodist also recorded three errors, leading to five of the Wildcats' runs counting as unearned.
- Methodist flipped the script in game two, finally lighting a spark on offense. After Hannah Lovick's double in the top of the first inning scored two runs, the Monarchs cranked out an eight-run inning in the bottom of the second that saw 13 at-bats, with all nine players in Methodist's lineup reaching base at least once during the inning.
- Alexandra Edwards got the party started with a two-run blast to right field – the first Methodist homer this season. Three batters later, Rachel Blanchard tripled down the right-field line, scoring two more. A single by Grace Hobbs brought Blanchard across the plate, then a single by Haley Downes a few batters later scored Hobbs. Kealey Wade and Edwards (again) each recorded an RBI before the third out was recorded.
- With bases loaded in the top of the third, freshman Rachel Lawson singled up the middle to bring one run home. Up next, Downes tripled to center field, producing three more runs to give the Monarchs a 14-0 advantage. Methodist conceded just one run in the bottom of the third before adding two more in the top of the fourth – the first coming on an RBI triple by Blanchard (her second of the game). With Blanchard on third, Lovick singled to the outfield to bring in Methodist's 16th and final run of the game.
- After four strong innings by Deanna Ayres on the mound for Methodist, Kiersten Margoupis entered to pitch the fifth, collecting one strikeout and conceding just one unearned run before closing out the win.
NUMBERS
- Rachel Blanchard batted 4-for-4 during the win and 6-for-7 on the day with four runs scored and 3 RBI.
- Hannah Lovick and Sydney Sizemore each went 3-for-4 at the plate in game two, with four other Monarchs putting forth multi-hit efforts.
- Methodist produced an eight-run inning on three separate occasions last year, in wins against St. Andrews, Averett and Southern Virginia. 16 total runs is the most the Monarcsh have scored since an 18-15 victory at Randolph on Feb. 20, 2022.
