Methodist Suffers Setback at Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va.  On Saturday, February 24, Methodist University women's lacrosse traveled to the University of Lynchburg for a non-conference game, where the Hornets took down the Monarchs 16-5.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Lynchburg def. Methodist, 16-5
Records: Methodist 0-2, Lynchburg 1-1
Location: Shellenberger Field; Lynchburg, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lynchburg jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Payton Jones registered the first, and lone, Methodist goal in the first quarter.
  • The Hornets played some stingy defense during the second period as they held the Monarchs to just one shot the entire 15 minutes. While Lynchburg's defense was holding Methodist, the Hornet offense recorded another six goals to take a 9-2 advantage.
  • Following a lightening delay, Kennedy Martin tallied the first of two Methodist goals in the third frame. The other Monarch score came off the stick of Mikayla Ramos. In between Martin's & Ramos' goals, Lynchburg increased its lead by five.
  • The fourth stanza saw both sides add two more goals to their respective totals, with Layla Wiesenfeld and Martin recording the scores for Methodist.
FAST FACTS
  • Splitting Methodist cage time were Ashley Fuentes and Victorianna Murray, with Fuentes playing the first 41 minutes follow by Murray for the remaining 17:47. For Murray, a freshman, this was her first collegiate game and she made two saves.
  • Martin led the Monarch offense with two goals and an assist.
  • As a team, Methodist only finished with two less draw controls than Lynchburg (13 to 11). Winning the most DCs for the Monarchs was Jones with four, tied for game-high.
UP NEXT
It's a fairly quick turnaround for Methodist as its next contest is on Monday, February 26. The Monarchs will be hosting Bridgewater College in Monarch Stadium at 5 PM.
