THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Bridgewater, 9-8
Records: Methodist 1-2, Bridgewater 1-1
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist had some defensive struggles in the early stages of the first quarter with the Monarchs surrendering four Bridgewater goals, in the span of two and half minutes. Methodist finally got on the scoreboard following a Payton Jones goal, but the Eagles matched that Jones score with another goal toward the end of the first.
- In the second frame, goals by Martin and Layla Wiesenfeld cut the deficit down to two for Methodist until a free position goal by Bridgewater made it a three-score game again, 6-3. With about a minute left before halftime, Tia Marlinghaus took advantage of an extra-man opportunity and found the back of the cage for the Monarchs fourth goal of the game.
- To make-up for what happened in the beginning of the contest, the defensive unit of Methodist came out and had its best quarter (third) of the season. The Monarchs held the Eagles offense to just one shot for the entire 15 minutes while also forcing four of the nine Bridgewater turnovers. During that time, Marlinghaus and Wiesenfeld registered two more Methodist goals to tie the game 6-6.
- The Eagles were able to get one past the Monarchs' goalie for the first time in the second half, at the 11:39 mark of the fourth period, to give them a one-goal lead. The two teams then traded off free position goals, with Jones scoring for Methodist, to keep Bridgewater in front 8-7.
- During the final five minutes of the game, the Monarchs had three major events occur to help capture the win. The first was Rosa Williams scoring the game-tying goal followed by Methodist goalie, Ashley Fuentes, coming up with a terrific save on an Eagle free position attempt. Capping it off was Martin running from one end of the field to the other for the score.
