Methodist Upends Aurora in Overtime for Home Win

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  In back-to-back games, junior Kennedy Martin had Monarch Stadium roaring as she scored the game-winning goal for Methodist University women's lacrosse, a 11-10 overtime victory against Aurora University.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Aurora, 11-10 (OT)
Records: Methodist 2-2, Aurora 1-2
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarch defense looked a little out of sort in the early minutes of the contest as the Spartan tallied two quick goals. After settling in, Tia Marlinghaus and Rosa Williams responded back for Methodist with two first quarter scores as well.
  • Following its opening goals, Aurora was held scoreless for the remainder of first quarter but then only required 14 seconds into quarter two to take the lead again, 3-2. The Spartans went on to add two more goals before the Monarchs registered their lone score, by Marlinghaus, of the period. With a minute left until halftime, Aurora increased its advantage by one to make it a three-goal difference, 6-3.
  • Shortly after the break the Spartans went up by four goals, their largest lead of the game. Cutting the deficit in half, 7-5, for the Monarchs were Mikayla Ramos and Marlinghaus, three minutes into the third stanza. Following another goal by each team, with Layla Wiesenfeld scoring for Methodist, Aurora reclaimed its three-goal (9-6) advantage at the 5:18 mark of the third.
  • Marlinghaus, Ramos, and Martin went on to score the next three goals of the game, which spaned from the end of the third (35 seconds) through majority of the fourth quarter, for the Monarchs to tie it up at 9-9. The Spartans would end up in front one last time after they registered their 10th goal with 1:48 left on the clock.
  • Winning the ensuing draw control was Methodist and following a shot that went wide, Maddie Hagler scored the game tying goal with 40 seconds left. A little over a minute into overtime, Monarchs fans thought Williams scored the game-winner but a yellow card negated the goal and gave possession to Aurora.
  • Even the Spartans getting the ball, Methodist defense stepped up and held Aurora to no shots on the possession before forcing a shot clock violation to conclude the first three minutes of OT. After the teams switched sides, the Spartans won the next draw control and were getting ready for offense until Martin came from behind to force an Aurora turnover. Not only did she cause the turnover but she also picked up the groundball and raced towards the Spartan's goal, then capped it off with the goal.
