Methodist Drops Two in Demorest

DEMOREST, Ga.  Taking on a fierce squad in the Piedmont Lions, the Methodist baseball team suffered two losses on Sunday. The Monarchs struggled to string hits together as they produced just six runs total across both games.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Piedmont took control with two runs in the second inning, followed by a four-run bottom of the third. Down 6-0, the Monarchs responded in the top of the fourth with a leadoff double by Hunter Hollman, who advanced to third on a Banks Hartman single, then scored on a wild pitch.
  • The Lions added another run in the fifth and one more in the sixth, taking an 8-1 advantage while the Piedmont pitchers fanned multiple Methodist batters. With a leadoff triple in the top of the seventh, Caleb Rogers was brought home to make the score 8-2, but the Monarchs conceded three more runs in the eighth inning to make the final score 11-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • The Monarchs took advantage of a Piedmont fielding error to put their first runner on base in the first inning. With Tristen Melvin on third, the designated hitter Austin Williams produced a single, recording her first collegiate RBI.
  • Caleb Greene led off the second inning with a triple, then saw help from Brandon Mauger, who singled and sent a run in. In the bottom of the second, Methodist's 2-0 lead quickly became a 4-2 deficit after the Lions drew a handful of walks to go along with two hits.
  • Piedmont's lead grew to 6-2 in the fourth inning with a 2-RBI triple. The Monarchs struggled to generate hits, while the Lions tacked on four more runs in the seventh.
  • With his team down 10-2, Melvin delivered a 2-RBI double in the top of the eighth, but the effort was not enough to create a full comeback for Methodist.
 
STAT FACTS
  • Piedmont's pitching duo of Zeke Swartz and Tyler Roon combined for 12 strikeouts in the first contest – eight in seven innings for Swartz and four in two innings for Roon
  • Methodist (14) outhit Piedmont (11) in game two, but the Monarchs drew three walks compared to 10 drawn by Piedmont batters.
  • Drew Moerschbacher and Xander Johnson both pitched a scoreless inning each in their Methodist debuts.
