FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. On Tuesday, March 12, Methodist University women's lacrosse dominated non-conference foe Averett University as the Monarchs kept the Cougars off the scoreboard in their 17-0 victory.
This is the third recorded shutout in Methodist program history, and the first since the 2005 season. This is also the second time in the all-time series that the Monarchs have blanked the Cougars, occurred for the first time in March of 2005.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- 49 seconds into the contest, Tia Marlinghaus registered the first goal for Methodist after receiving a pass from Kennedy Martin. The Monarchs went on to score four more goals in the first quarter to go up 5-0.
- Just like the previous period, Methodist doubled its score before reaching halftime (10-0). Getting involved on three of the five goals was Kayla Nee, as the Monarchs' all-time assist leader added three more helpers to her career.
- The scoring outburst continued for Methodist in the third stanza with four additional scores. Among the goal scorers was defender Brooke Murrell, who tallied her first-ever collegiate goal.
- In the lowest scoring quarter, fourth, for the Monarchs, Layla Wiesenfeld registered two of the three goals.
FAST FACTS
- Methodist only allowed Averett to get off four total shots, three of which were on target and saved by Monarch goalie Ashley Fuentes.
- Leading the Methodist offense was Payton Jones with five goals and one assist. Right behind her was Marlinghaus & Wiesenfeld, three each, followed by Mikayla Ramos (2).
- The limited Cougar offense was due to the fact they could not clear the ball during their possessions, 8 of 23. The Monarchs were successful on 15 of their 17 clear attempts.
