Monarchs Pull Away For First League Win of the Year

MISENHEIMER, N.C.  Methodist University women's lacrosse opened USA South Athletic Conference play on Friday, March 15, with a road contest at Pfeiffer University. Following a close first quarter, the Monarchs overpowered the Falcons and defeated them 20-9 for their first league win of the 2024 season.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Pfeiffer, 20-9
Records: Methodist 5-2 (1-0 USA South), Pfeiffer 3-5 (0-1)
Location: N.E. Lefko Field; Misenheimer, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Pfeiffer registered two of the first three goals, at the start of the game, before Methodist strung together three consecutive goals, two of which were recorded by Rosa Williams, to give the Monarchs a 4-2 edge. Back-to-back scores by the Falcons would tie up the ballgame until a goal by Mikayla Ramos put Methodist back in front, 5-4.
  • The trio of Kennedy Martin, Ramos, and Layla Wiesenfeld increased the Monarchs lead by three, 8-4, midway through the second period. After Pfeiffer recorded its first score of the second, Ramos of Methodist found the back of cage two more times to double the score of the Falcons, 10-5. Each side would tally one more goal apiece, with Payton Jones scoring for the Monarchs, before reaching halftime.
  • The third and fourth quarters saw Methodist outscore Pfeiffer 9-3. Scoring four of the goals was Martin, two in each frame.
FAST FACTS
  • Ramos finished with a game-high six goals for the Monarchs while Martin was not too far behind with five, which matches a career-high.
  • Tia Marlinghaus came up just short of matching her career-high in draw controls, as she had 11 (game-high). Those 11 DCs though brings her career total to 223 which is now the second-best mark in program history. She surpassed MU Athletics Hall of Famer Jasmine Stephens, who had 215 DCs.
  • For the second time in team history, Methodist fired off a single-game record 60 shots, 49 of which were on goal, in its win. The only other time the Monarchs did this was during the 2018 season against Salem College.
UP NEXT
Methodist does not take the field again until nine days from now, when the Monarchs host Kalamazoo College in their last non-conference game of 2024. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 PM.
