Methodist Offense Held in Check Against William Peace on Saturday

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Following a day where Methodist University baseball scored a plethora of runs, the Monarch bats were kept fairly quiet in the 3-2 USA South Athletic Conference loss to William Peace University, on Saturday, March 16.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: William Peace def. Methodist, 3-2
Records: Methodist 9-8 (1-1 USA South), William Peace 5-10 (1-1)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After being held to zero runs in the first game of the series, the Pacers were the first team to register a run. During the top of the first, the leadoff man walked before stealing second base. The runner then came around to score on a base hit back up the middle.
  • William Peace tallied its second run in a similar fashion a few innings later, the fourth. Cutting down a runner at home was Methodist, for the second out, on a fielder's choice, which left Pacer runners on first & second base. On the first pitch to the next batter, a roller to centerfield allowed the runner from second to cross the plate.
  • Through four innings the Monarchs had a zero in the hits category until Caleb Greene came up to the plate in the fifth. On the first pitch he saw, Greene sent the ball over the left fielder's head for an easy stand-up double, and scoring on the play was Brandon Mauger, who reached on a walk two batters earlier, from first base.
  • An inning later, Methodist came close to tying up the game. Jackson Deal was on third, with two outs, when the William Peace pitcher threw a pitch over his catcher's head. Deal sprinted home but a friendly bounce off the backstop enabled the catcher to grab the ball and toss it to the pitcher for the tag out to end the sixth.
  • The Pacers added an insurance run in the seventh, 3-1, before the Monarchs made it a one-run contest again in the eighth. After Hunter Hollman was hit by a pitch to get on first, Banks Hartman did not waste time, with a hack on the first pitch, and sent a long fly ball toward the left field corner for a fair ball. Coming around to score was Hollman while Hartman trotted to second base.
  • Methodist was able to get a base runner, with one out, in the ninth but then William Peace shut down the door with back-to-back strikeouts.
MORE STATS
  • Greene (2-4) recorded two of the four Monarchs hits in this game, while also registering one of the RBIs.
  • Getting the start today for Methodist was Josh Plisko, who went four innings and gave up two runs. Brandon Humphreys came in relief and tossed 3.2 innings, allowing just one run, before Jackson Kuhn finished off the remaining 1.1 innings.
  • Since 2021, the Pacers have taken ten out of the last 15 games against the Monarchs.
