ASHLAND, Va. The Methodist baseball team had a tough time at Randolph-Macon on Tuesday, conceding 24 runs in a loss to the Yellow Jackets.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: Randolph-Macon def. Methodist, 24-6
Records: Methodist 10-9, Randolph Macon 9-5
Location: Estes Park; Ashland, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs found themselves in a huge hole after Randolph-Macon produced an 11-run first inning in which the Yellow Jackets recorded seven hits and two walks while Methodist accumulated two errors. After the second inning, the Yellow Jackets possessed a 14-0 lead. Both teams saw a scoreless third inning before Randolph-Macon added two more runs to its total in the fourth.
- In the top of the sixth, Methodist's first two batters recorded outs, but the next Monarchs in line to step up to the plate brought some life to the team's offense. Banks Hartman singled before Caleb Rogers reached base on a fielding error. Next, freshman Brandon Mauger scored himself, Hartman and Rogers with a three-run homer – giving Methodist its first runs of the day.
- After the homerun, Banks Engle doubled to center field, then Caleb Greene tripled to right-center field. The extra-base hits accomplished an "inning cycle" for the Monarchs, who collectively recorded a single, double, triple and homerun during the frame. Greene's hit scored Engle, which preceded a single by Tristen Melvin that scored Greene.
- After a five-run frame for Methodist, the Yellow Jackets once again put up two more runs in the bottom of the inning. They added another in the seventh, then the Monarchs added one run of their own in the top of the eighth (an RBI groundout for Colton Rutledge that scored Austin Williams).
- Randolph-Macon wrapped up the scoring with an exclamatory five runs in the bottom the eighth inning to extend its lead to 18 runs.
