Monarchs Lose Lead in Loss to No.17 Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va.  With a six-run lead, the Methodist baseball team looked to have Lynchburg's number on Tuesday; the 17th-ranked Hornets were on the verge of their first non-conference loss in over three weeks. However, a seventh-inning spark lit a fire under the Lynchburg offense that pushed them past the Monarchs, resulting in a 9-8 win for the home-team Hornets.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final results: No. 17 Lynchburg def. Methodist, 9-8
Records: Methodist 12-11, Lynchburg 15-6
Location: James C. Fox Field; Lynchburg, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist grabbed the first run of the game as Caleb Rogers batted Jackson Deal in. Lynchburg matched that with a run of its own in the second inning.
  • The bats got hot for the Monarchs in the fourth inning, as Banks Engle doubled to put runners on second and third. Caleb Greene grounded out but pushed a run across the plate, then Tristen Melvin reached on an error and sent Engle in for another Methodist run.
  • Two at-bats later, Deal delivered a hit that scored Melvin. With the Monarchs ahead 4-1, Hunter Hollman launched a homerun that put three more runs on the board for the Green and Gold.
  • Lynchburg got one run back in the fifth, then traded runs with Methodist in the sixth.
  • With Paul Olive and Anthony Miale both taking a turn on the mound in the seventh inning, the Hornets totaled three hits, three walks and one hit-by-pitch after the Monarchs had already recorded two outs. The result was six runs in favor of Lynchburg, erasing Methodist's lead and giving the Hornets a 9-8 advantage.
  • Methodist put the tying run on third base in the ninth inning, but was unable to advance the runner another 90 feet.
STAT FACTS
  • With his 3-RBI homer, Hunter Hollman now leads the team with 24 RBI on the season. He also leads the team with 35 hits and a slugging percentage of .576, and he is the only player to reach base in all 23 games so far this season.
  • The Monarchs managed to score eight runs despite recording just six hits. They also drew six walks, while the Hornets drew eight.
